For Caleb's 3 year check up, Dr. Wood heard a murmur in Caleb's heart. We went to Dr. Hixon a cardiologist and found that Caleb had COA, coarcation of the aorta. We started monitoring it but it never got better. Mom and Dad had to make a really hard decision and have a balloon angioplasty procedure done. (It was so hard because he had no physical symptoms). So on March 20, Mom, Dad and Caleb went to New Orleans to meet Dr Lucas who would be performing the procedure and Caleb had his procedure March 21st. (Nana and Paw Paw stayed with me and Eila and brought us to our many activities we are involved in). The surgery took about 3 hours and everything went well. Before the surgery, his gradient (delta) was 38 and after it was 12. He had to stay still for 4 hours after so we kept him as medicated as possible. Once he woke up, he had no pain and was able to eat shortly after. We were realeased by 8 am the next day. He came home running with no pain (except band aid) and no restrictions. He returned to school the next Monday. Hands down the hardest thing Mommy and Daddy have ever done. But if not treated Caleb would have many heart related problems.
